Raise Standards

Standards 2.4.1, 2.4.2, 2.6.1 and 2.7.1 are core. How will your organization achieve these standards? How does the organization currently interact with consumers to develop publications that meet their needs and not just the needs of the organisation? Does the executive team have an understanding of patient centred care?

When developing patient information literature it is important to remember the audience. Working in health we become accustomed to the language and slang that is used daily. It is our reality. But it is not the reality of patients and carers.

At a recent Patient Experience Advisory Group meeting, staff members were discussing a brochure they had developed to explain to parents the reasons a baby may be moved from the special care nursery to paediatrics prior to discharge.

The brochure also explained the process involved in that transfer. As the discussion progressed, parent members of the group asked about the brochure. At that moment staff realized they had not involved parents in any stage of the brochure development.
